The Tennessee Association for the Education of Young Children

Greater Kingsport Association for the Education for Young Children

(GKAEYC)

Includes Carter, Greene, Hawkins, Hamblen, Hancock, Johnson, Sullivan, Washington, and Unicoi counties

GKAEYC works to ensure high quality care and education for all children from birth to age eight. Our organization provides free training, a Quality Matters Newsletter including information about how children grow and develop, special topics, DHS licensing news and upcoming training in our area. We encourage all members of our organization to obtain quality training and early childhood education. We offer a Pat Timberlake Scholarship, to those who qualify, to defray the cost of CDA. In addition, GKAEYC has a Public Policy Committee that actively works to educate our membership concerning advocacy for young children. We celebrated all of our membership at our May meeting by offering words of encouragement, providing ice cream sundaes, viewing the video "Celebrating Early Childhood Teachers," and presenting each member with an Early Childhood Worker's Inspirational Kit. We also surveyed the members at our May meeting to determine what our membership preferred concerning year-round meetings. The consensus of our group was to meet year-round taking December and July off and continue having the Spring Workshop in April. With this decision, we will be able to provide our members with 13.5 hours of training annually. GKAEYC partners with CHILDREN* of Tri-cities, Tennessee Early Training Alliance and other local organizations to provide a Spring Workshop during the Week of the Young Child. At our General Assembly, which included both parents and educators, Kingsport Mayor Jeanette D. Blaizer issued a citywide proclamation proclaiming April 9-15 "The Week of the Young Child." During this week our organization sponsored a FUN FAIR for the children of the area. This celebration involved local child care centers, area businesses, high school students, and community service agencies. To mark the event, a child-designed T-shirt and pins were available to everyone. The pins will continue to be sold.
