Rutherford Association for the Education for Young Children

(RAEYC)

Includes Cannon, Dekalb, Rutherford, Smith, Warren, and Wilson counties

The RAEYC Board has expanded this year with the goal to include all areas that directly effect young children in Rutherford County. The Board now includes a Head Start representative, Children's Library representative, City School representative, County School representative, and a DHS representative, bringing our number to 21 people who volunteer their time and expertise to promote quality care for the children of Rutherford County.

RAEYC continues to sponsor the Wealth of Curriculum program and the Passport to Adventure program. The Wealth of Curriculum program allows child care providers to reserve a collection of resource materials for a certain period of time at no cost. The Passport to Adventure program allows child care providers to reserve a collection of children's books for a certain period of time at no cost.

RAEYC has sponsored two Directors' meetings this year. In February a workshop was presented at the local office of the Tennessee Emergency Management Association in Murfreesboro. The presentation dealt with how to prepare for a disaster and procedures to following the event of a disaster. In April a workshop was presented in Murfreesboro on NAEYC Accreditation. The presentation covered the process of accreditation and resources to use.

The RAEYC Spring Conference was held in March. This year's theme was "Reinventing Childhood - Entering the Child's World." The keynote speaker was Mary Jo Huff, a well-known storyteller and early childhood educator. RAEYC was fortunate to have an excellent group of presenters and exhibitors. The conference was well attended. RAEYC was pleased to sponsor Family Night in March. The community was invited to share an evening with Mary Jo Huff who presented a program on how to use storytelling in an exciting way to help develop language skills in young children. In April RAEYC co-sponsored an event with YMCA to celebrate the Week of the Young Child. The event was called Celebrating Children of a New Millenium and was held at the Murfreesboro YMCA. There were many events and activities that were available to the families free of charge. Also in April RAEYC hosted a "Simply the Best" banquet. Awards were given to early childhood providers who had been nominated by a coworker, director, or parent.

RAEYC will sponsor its Fall conference on September 23. RAEYC has also agreed to co-sponsor the TAEYC annual conference to be held in Nashville October 4-7.
