SCAEYC has been enjoying an exciting 2000. The year began with a Board retreat committed to creating a mission statement for SCAEYC. The end result of an enjoyable and productive time together was a mission statement that incorporates our logo:

"We believe the early years are of vital importance; therefore, the mission of South Central Association for the Education of Young Children is to safeguard children and the sanctity of childhood.

Take a hand:
Create partnerships with families, providers, advocates and community.
Touch a heart:
Nurture and support families and providers as they impact the lives of children.
Teach a child:
Promote a lifelong love of learning so each child may reach full potential."

Since SCAEYC covers a large geographical area, consisting of 13 rural counties, we are continuing to offer regional spot workshops most months in addition to our Spring and Fall conferences. This has been a successful program to bring training opportunities closer to the providers. The spring conference was held in Shelbyville with a standing-room only crowd. The Fall conference is scheduled for September 9 in Columbia. Featured presenters include Dr. Rebecca Isbell and Rachel Summers.

These are exciting days for SCAEYC. We are currently recruiting new board members in an effort to keep up with our growing constituency and programs. The board is working on a policies and procedures manual, updated and revised job descriptions, by-laws and constitution. Plans are underway to revamp our newsletter. We continue to work with our Technical Resource Center and TECTA to better meet the needs of our members and participants. Early childhood professionals living and/or working in the south central area are invited and encouraged to get involved. There are opportunities for everyone.
